It is a white crystalline powder with a density of 2.428g/cm3. Its melting point is 89l ℃. Potassium carbonate is soluble in water, and the aqueous solution is alkaline. It is insoluble in ethanol, acetone, and ether.

It has strong hygroscopicity and can absorb carbon dioxide and water when exposed to the air, transforming it into potassium bicarbonate. Hydrates include monohydrate, dihydrate, and trihydrate.
